The graphics and score are perfect, nothing else to be said. The actual battles are all utterly brilliant: whether you're gripping for your life on an airborne colossus that's twisting and diving around deep marshland, on carefully stalking an enormous walking giant, or navigating your way along a water-based colossus as it twists and squirms through the chill depths of an ancient lake, you're bound to remember the experiences. But the feeling of elation you experience from defeating each foe is incredible. Facing the seemingly insurmountable task of locating a giant beast, that wanders somewhere in an enormous world, and then slaying it using only a sword and bow, is extremely daunting. To put it as well as possible, the atmosphere the game creates is just as potent as the effect it has upon the person playing it. The world you inhabit is remarkable, and yet also empty.Ĭonfused? The reason is basically that you cannot do this game justice with a handful of words. The focus of the game is on combat, yet there are only 16 battles in the entire game. The story is enchanting, yet barely anything is revealed. It represents the absolute pinnacle of adventure gaming in so many paradoxical ways: You have never played anything quite like 'Shadow of the Colossus' before. This game really is excellent and most people especially those who have played ICO will love this game. And once your finished hard mode you unlock HARD time attack mode. The colossi do more damage to you, are harder to kill and aswell as that most of them have extra major weakpoints that you have to get to and stab. However the battle graphics and especially the fur on the colossi is excellent.Īnyway every time you beat two colossi in TA mode you get an item from different arrows to an invisibility cloak. Everything looks blurry until you are fairly close. I don't like the searching bit as the landscape graphics IMO are not great. You don't have to find them again you start from when you first see the colossus. Time attack mode generally gives you 4-6 minutes to kill a colossus. I won't ruin anything else but just to tell you that once you finish the game make sure you save it as you unlock both time attack mode and hard mode. Don't worry though if you stay still you regain your strength. This is a colourful circle which gets smaller as your strength runs out. The main concern when killing the colossus is the grab/stamina/breath meter. Minor ones are places you stab to make the creature do something whether it's falling to their knees or trying to grab you with their hand. Major weakpoints are ones you must stab to kill the colossus. Basically each colossus has weak points both major and minor. The sword, when the sun is out points in the direction of the next colossus. Look around for guides on the web to find them. Control of the horse is fairly good though there are some undocumented controls that you'll need. The story does not hold your hand and leaves much to the imagination which I like. ![]() ![]() This creates enough change to keep most people's interest. Although the game is repetitive, as the review below says each colossus requires a different method to kill it. This game in my opinion is easily one of the best game for the PS2. The bottom line: One of the most beautiful and original video games ever made. Since you ask: This game is by the same team behind cult hit ICO, although a connection between the two stories is only evident at the very end of the game… ![]() Most exciting moment: Your first sight of a colossus, as you realise the end-of-level boss is the level. The method of killing each one is perhaps not quite as varied as it could be and it’s a shame that there’s not anything to do in the overworld except travel to the next colossi, but the overall gaming experience is unparalleled. The colossi look particularly amazing, as you reach barely to the toe tops of most of them. ![]() The graphics are fantastic, both technically and in terms of artistic design, and the melancholy atmosphere utterly unique. The lowdown: This game really does look and plays like nothing else, with a game world as large as the colossi which you can only explore via your trusty horse Argo. Each colossus has a weak point though and by climbing onto them and exploring them like moving castles you may have a chance to save your sweetheart. Cast as the mysterious Wanderer you are charged with destroying sixteen colossi – gigantic and apparently invincible stone monsters. In a nutshell: In a world of identikit sequels and licenses this game stands alone.
